THE WORLD CANCER DAY CAMPAIGN

She’s done it again gang. As usual the latest GIRLvsCANCER shoot was full to the brim. Fizzing with thirty of instagram’s finest.  Coupled with some of my ever-increasing cancer community’s cool kids – stories were shared, bonds were built and many MANY t-shirts were shot.

But today isn’t just any old launch day – oh no – today is in fact World Cancer Day. A whole twenty-four hours dedicated to encouraging all of us humans on planet Earth to raise our collective voice, take personal action and press governments around the globe to do more to combat this devastating disease.

According to the World Health Organisation it is estimated that there were 18.1 million new cancer diagnosis cases in 2018 and frighteningly one in five men and one in six women worldwide develop cancer during their lifetime.

This equates to 9.6 million people dying each year from cancer – that’s more than HIV / AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined – crazy innit?

Which means if you personally are not diagnosed with cancer, somebody you love dearly is likely to be. In short – everybody on the planet will be affected by cancer at some point in their lives.

But this figure is certain to increase – IF we don’t act.

World Cancer Day‘s campaign for the next three years is titled ‘I Am And I Will’. Put simply this is a call to commitment for each and every one of us to act now in order to impact the future landscape of cancer. Whether it’s to learn more about the disease, to donate time, donate dosh or simply spread the word – today we empower + unite.

Here at GIRLvsCANCER HQ our support comes in the form of three chic new t-shirt styles designed by the hob-dancing dreamboat and #JustALine printing lovely Vickie Neave – also known on Instagram as @InpoLife. Vick and I worked together to design some ass-kicking positive affirmations to give anyone struggling the boost they may need.

It wouldn’t be a GIRLvsCANCER collab if it wasn’t tongue-in-cheek in its tone. And full of alliteration. Standard.

Our first new style says FIERCE AS FUCK (because you are) and the second sports the statement HOPE IS DOPE (because it is).

As always 25% sales from both of these styles will be split equally and donated to my four Partner Charities – namely Trekstock, CoppaFeel!, Look Good Feel Better and Future Dreams.

But I’ve got to be up front about the fact that this collection means a little more to me than usual.

As you’ll be more than well aware that our You, Me & The Big C podcast captain Rachael Bland went and died on us in September of last year (selfish) and I had been wracking my brains on the best way to honour her. So I did it in the best way I know how. With her very own dedicated special edition GIRLvsCANCER t-shirt – KEEP YOUR COOL.

Unlike Deb and I who have been likened to herding cats buy our long-suffering podcast producers Rach has always been the most cool, calm and collected of our podcast trifecta. She was also a staunch supporter of Paxman Scalp Cooling which saved her impressive blonde mane during months of corroding chemotherapy.

Paxman‘s pioneering FDA approved cold cap system has helped over 100,000 cancer patients in more than 25 countries worldwide – and counting. I am super proud to be donating 25% of sales from Rach’s KEEP YOUR COOL tee to the team at Paxman to assist them in tackling one of the most traumatic side effects associated with cancer treatment.

In a business bristling with hashtag ad and hastag spon it feels glorious to have the UK’s blogging MVP’s use their influence for the greater good and I cannot express the depth of my gratitude for all the gals and guys who took part.

Having an army of instagrams finest stood shoulder-to-shoulder with some of my most fave faces in the cancer community was truly humbling. To be able to leverage our platforms to open doors, minds and wallets is something so incredibly special. Overwhelmingly so.

Since my diagnosis there has been no shortage of support but when I called upon this crew to get involved with my most recent cancer crusade they came sprinting laden with encouragement and love and an impressive combined instagram audience of 8.2 million. Pretty impressive eh?

But this level of awesome does come easy my friends. Oh no. Months of meticulous planning, blood, sweat and bitch fits saw this shoot eventually come to fruition. As did other people’s generosity. Whether that be their time, trade or things my GIRLvsCANCER vision only comes alive because of those involved.

I know I’ll never be able to say enough thank you’s. The thing is I don’t think anyone realises that this ‘thing’ we’ve created literally pulled me through the darkest part of my life thus far.

Not gonna lie I’ve cried tears of overwhelmed joy over and over. Consumed with gratitude. Consumed with appreciation.

MASSIVE big up’s to JJ Media for offering up their awesome Apex studio, OZone Coffee, Fiji Water, Pod, Krispy Kreme and Grape & Fig for the epic catering as well as Rush and Smashbox for making all my ‘models’ feel like glam AF.

So go on, get stuck into the new  GIRLvsCANCER Collection. Because if you’re gonna give cancer the middle finger you may as well do it in red lippie and a sassy t-shirt eh?
